Exercise or relaxation trial after stroke

STARTER (STroke: a Randomised Trial of Exercise or Relaxation)

There are several theoretical reasons why exercise or relaxation may be beneficial after stroke. STARTER is an exploratory trial which randomizes ambulatory stroke patients to a 12 week programme of physical fitness training or relaxation. A comprehensive battery of assessments (including disability, quality of life, mobility, mood and physical fitness) are performed prior to randomization, at the end of the interventions and 4 months later. Our aim is to assess the feasibility of the interventions, and to estimate the effect size of the two interventions. We anticipate that STARTER will lead to a definitive multi-centre trial of fitness training or relaxation.
