Biography

I am a clinical lecturer in Geriatric Medicine.  After obtaining a First class honours degree in Neurosciences I subsequently qualified in Medicine in 2000 from the University of Edinburgh.  I achieved a training number in Geriatric Medicine and was awarded a Wellcome Trust Clinical research Training Fellowship which investigated retinal changes in lacunar stroke.  I am currently planning further research fellowship proposals.  I have supervised successful medical student projects, presented at international conferences and regularly review abstracts, journal articles for international journals and grant applications.

Broad Areas of interest:

Research

My principal research interests lie in establishing the pathophysiology of cerebral small vessel disease causing lacunar stroke and white matter disease.  My doctoral research, which was funded by a Wellcome Trust Clinical Research Training Fellowship under the supervision of Profs Joanna Wardlaw and Martin Dennis, investigated retinal vessel abnormalities as a marker of cerebral small vessel disease in stroke patients.  My future research areas currently lie with the use of advanced MRI techniques to study the aetiology of lacunar stroke and white matter disease specifically investigating cerebral and retinal vascaulr reactivity in response to hypercapneic stimuli.  I am currently following up my cohort of stroke patients for longitudinal associations between retinal and MRI findings and establishing collaborations with colleagues in the UK, Canada and Australia.

Clinical

I am a specialist registrar and I will accredit in geriatric and general internal medicine with Stroke Medicine subspecialty training (CCT date 31st May 2012).  I am currently based in the Borders General Hospital but have recently worked in the Western General Hospital, Edinburgh and the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh.
